Hyundai Bayon Launched at ₹9.99 Lakh: How It Compares With Creta, Seltos and Rivals

Hyundai Bayon has launched in India at ₹9.99 lakh, with a top price of ₹17.99 lakh. Compare its dimensions, engine options, features and pricing with the Creta, Seltos, Duster, Sierra and other rival SUVs.

Hyundai has launched the Bayon in the Indian market at an introductory ex-showroom price of ₹9.99 lakh, positioning it as a more affordable alternative to the Creta. The SUV was unveiled in the global market earlier this month and becomes Hyundai’s second mid-size SUV in India. However, despite its lower starting price, the Bayon will face competition not only from the Creta but also from the Kia Seltos, Renault Duster, Tata Sierra, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder and Maruti Suzuki Victoris.

The Hyundai Bayon is available at prices ranging from ₹9.99 lakh to ₹17.99 lakh ex-showroom. It comes with several features, including a Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) package with 23 features in the top variant. However, its relatively limited powertrain choices and compact dimensions could influence its position against established rivals.

Hyundai Bayon Dimensions: How It Compares With Rivals

The Hyundai Bayon is the shortest SUV among the models compared, measuring 4,245 mm in length. Its compact dimensions could be one of its key selling points for buyers looking for a smaller SUV. In comparison, the Kia Seltos is the longest in this group, measuring 4,460 mm.

The Bayon measures 1,810 mm in width and 1,605 mm in height, while its wheelbase stands at 2,600 mm. It offers a boot capacity of 505 litres and ground clearance of 205 mm. The SUV comes with 17-inch wheels.

The Hyundai Creta measures 4,330 mm in length, 1,790 mm in width and 1,635 mm in height. It comes with a 2,610 mm wheelbase, 433 litres of boot space, 190 mm of ground clearance and 17-inch wheels.

The Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara and Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder measure 4,345 mm in length and 1,795 mm in width, with a height of 1,645 mm and a 2,600 mm wheelbase. Their boot capacity depends on the variant. Both offer 210 mm of ground clearance and 17-inch wheels.

The Maruti Suzuki Victoris measures 4,360 mm in length, 1,795 mm in width and 1,655 mm in height. It has a 2,600 mm wheelbase, variant-dependent boot space, 210 mm of ground clearance and 17-inch wheels.

Although the Bayon is the shortest SUV in this comparison, its 205 mm ground clearance and 505-litre boot capacity are among its notable specifications.

Hyundai Bayon Engine and Transmission Options

The Hyundai Bayon uses the same 1.5-litre, four-cylinder naturally aspirated MPI petrol engine as the Creta. The engine produces 115 PS of power and 143.8 Nm of torque. Transmission options include a six-speed manual gearbox and an Intelligent Variable Transmission (IVT).

The Creta and Seltos also offer this naturally aspirated petrol engine. However, several competing SUVs provide additional powertrain choices, giving buyers more flexibility depending on their driving requirements.

The Renault Duster is listed with 1.0-litre turbo-petrol and 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engine options, producing 99 bhp and 160 bhp, respectively, with torque figures of 160 Nm and 280 Nm. Its transmission options include a six-speed manual and a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT).

The Tata Sierra offers 1.5-litre naturally aspirated and 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engines. Their listed outputs are 106 bhp and 160 bhp, with torque figures of 145 Nm and 255 Nm. Transmission options include a six-speed manual, seven-speed DCA and six-speed torque-converter automatic.

The Kia Seltos and Hyundai Creta offer 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol and 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engines, with listed power outputs of 113 bhp and 158 bhp and torque figures of 144 Nm and 253 Nm. Both models offer six-speed manual, IVT and DCT transmission options. The Seltos and Creta also provide diesel engine options.

The Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder and Maruti Suzuki Victoris are listed with 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engines producing 103 bhp and 137 Nm of torque. Their transmission options include a five-speed manual and a six-speed torque-converter automatic.

The Bayon is currently offered exclusively with a front-wheel-drive setup. In comparison, the Grand Vitara, Hyryder and Victoris offer both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations.

Hyundai has confirmed that it will introduce a CNG version of the Bayon next year. At present, the Grand Vitara, Victoris and Toyota Hyryder are the only models in this comparison offering CNG options. Hybrid powertrains are also available in the Renault Duster, Grand Vitara, Victoris and Toyota Hyryder, according to the provided comparison.

With only one petrol engine option at launch, the Bayon currently has fewer powertrain choices than several of its rivals.

Hyundai Bayon Price Compared With Rivals

The Hyundai Bayon starts at ₹9.99 lakh ex-showroom, while its top variant is priced at ₹17.99 lakh. The top-spec version includes exclusive features such as an AI assistant and a Level 2 ADAS package featuring 23 functions.

The Renault Duster is priced from ₹10.49 lakh to ₹19.49 lakh ex-showroom. The Tata Sierra starts at ₹11.49 lakh, with its range extending to ₹21.59 lakh. The Kia Seltos is priced between ₹11.25 lakh and ₹21.82 lakh, while the Hyundai Creta costs between ₹10.91 lakh and ₹20.46 lakh.

The Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara is priced between ₹10.77 lakh and ₹19.77 lakh, while the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder's price range extends from ₹12.82 lakh to ₹20.19 lakh. The Maruti Suzuki Victoris is priced between ₹10.5 lakh and ₹19.99 lakh.

Based on these listed prices, the Bayon's ₹17.99 lakh top-end variant is cheaper than the top variants of the competing SUVs mentioned. The Seltos tops the comparison at ₹21.82 lakh, followed by the Sierra at ₹21.59 lakh and the Creta at ₹20.46 lakh.

However, the Bayon's pricing advantage comes alongside a more limited powertrain lineup. It does not currently offer turbo-petrol, diesel, hybrid or CNG engine options, although the company has confirmed plans for a CNG version next year.

The Hyundai Bayon enters India's mid-size SUV market with a lower starting price than the Creta and a compact footprint, while offering a 505-litre boot and a comprehensive ADAS package in its top variant. Its ability to compete with the Creta, Seltos, Duster, Sierra, Grand Vitara, Hyryder and Victoris will depend on how buyers weigh its pricing and features against the broader engine and drivetrain choices available across the segment.
